Arsenault Sunroom

While I was designing Hotel Shediac, my wife & I visited several Victorian-era homes for inspiration, notably a Manor in Massachusetts.

After spending several evenings sipping wine in the Manor’s great room, we decided to create a room with similar features in our home. A warm, well appointed, yet inviting living space, where we could spend time reading, listening to music or watching movies.

We wanted the overall look & feel like it was from the Victorian era, where people made use of dark rich woods, heavy trim-work & high ceilings to create interesting and luxurious living spaces. To achieve this, we decided on narrow dark floorboards, accented with dark, detailed wainscoting & 5” dark wood window/door trim. We installed a Victorian-themed fireplace on a cultured stone wall section, framed with dark wood columns & valance.

We also wanted the ceiling to be the coup-de-grace, so we incorporated a dark wood coffer & wood beams, trimmed with crown mouldings.

Lighting was certainly considered. Pot lights in the perimeter bulkhead accent the wood trim and directional pot lights accent the cultured stone wall. In ceiling center, we installed a chandelier, complete with a ceiling medallion to add to the era’s authenticity.
